Imaituk has been operating as a consulting firm since 2006. However, the knowledge we gained from working in Canada's arctic since 1987 has provided a perspective that helps us truly understand clients, working together on initiatives that make a difference.

IBA negotiations, business development and organizational development is led by Brian McLeod. Lorraine Thomas specializes in communications and research.

Impact & Benefit Agreement (IBA) Negotiations (Brian McLeod)

Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA):

Providing support for the negotiation of a new Inuit IBA with Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. on the Meliadine property in the Kivalliq Region, 2010-present

Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA):

Lead staff liaison for KIA in review and renegotiation of the Meadowbank Inuit IBA with Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd., 2009-present

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI):

Advisor in review of Conservation Areas Inuit IBA between NTI and the Canadian Wildlife Service, 2008-present

Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA):

Lead staff liaison for QIA in negotiating an Inuit IBA with Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation, 2007-present

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI):

Staff negotiator, NTI-Department of National Defence DEW Line Agreement; 1998-2001

Business & Organizational Development (Brian McLeod)

Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA):

Conducted a comprehensive policy review, and developed revised policy and procedures manuals with board and staff. 2008-09

Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA):

Led staff and board organizational development workshops. 2008-09

Qikiqtaaluk Corporation (QC):

In role as President of QC, acted as liaison between Board of Directors and 18 staff; oversaw operations and strategic planning for QC and three subsidiary businesses in real estate, retail, and construction management; established an Investment Advisory Committee; negotiated several large joint ventures partnerships in fisheries including the purchase of the Saputi, (pictured above), health care, shipping, contaminated site remediation, information technology and construction; and mentored an Inuit replacement as President. QC is the business arm of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, with consolidated revenues in 2006 of $45,000,000. 2004-06

Kakivak Association:

In role as CEO and President, initiated long term strategic planning and budgeting to reshape the organization for success. Acted as the conduit between staff of 18 and the Kakivak Board of directors; managed a $9,000,000 budget; maintained relations and monitoring funding agreements with three federal departments; participated in national committees reviewing the INAC Community Economic Development Program and the HRSDC Aboriginal Human Resource Development Strategy; and mentored an Inuit replacement as President. Kakivak Association is the community economic development arm of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association. 1999-2004

Communications & Research (Lorraine Thomas)

Arctic Communications Infrastructure Assessment:

Lorraine led a small team of people to conduct this comprehensive assessment of the Arctic communication infrastructure for the Northern Communications and Information Systems-Working Group (NCIS-WG). Imaituk held 6 workshops gathering information from almost 100 in-person participants, conducted intensive online surveys with government IT professionals, gathered detailed data from telecommunications infrastructure providers, and conducted an economic review of the Arctic communications infrastructure. A detailed report and a series of recommendations were released in May of 2011, published online at www.aciareport.ca. The Imaituk team conducted the original research, did the analysis, the writing, design, presentation, and online publication of the report in under 5 months. Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA):

Conducted community research for KIA on Coral Harbour tourism opportunities, including questionnaire development, one-on-one interviews, data analysis, marketing requirements and report production. 2010

Nunavut Broadband Development Corporation:

In role as Executive Director, helped set up the not-for-profit Corporation; conducted original research and needs analysis; worked on comprehensive business plans in 2003 and 2008 to establish investment requirements; helped launch the QINIQ network in 2005, connecting all Nunavut communities to affordable internet services; managed the finances of the NPO, raising funds and managing projects with an overall 6 year value of $40 million dollars; worked with media, all levels of government, Inuit organizations, community representatives, and members of the public; executive produced 6 videos, wrote and maintained website, developed in person and online training for community service providers, and supported the volunteer board. 2003-2009

Nortext:

As account manager for Nortext, an Ottawa-Nunavut multi-media agency, developed communication strategies, brand development, print, and online presence for various clients such as Nunavut Legislative Assembly, Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut, Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association, CareerPlace (a project of the Native Womens' Association of Canada), and project managed Nunavut.com, an Inuktitut online font development initiative funded through CANARIE. Co-wrote "Sivumuqpallianiq: Moving Forward: Strengthening Our Self-Reliance in the Information Age", with David E. Smith, a report of the Nunavut Broadband Task Force. Ottawa and Iqaluit, 1998-2003

Early broadband research:

Conceived and launched "Connecting the North", a pan-northern multi-platform collection of community input including interactive television, community meetings, phone and fax with all sectors in all northern regions from Yukon to Labrador, with 300 participants. Submitted comprehensive reports to the Information Highway Advisory Council, key documents leading to the eventual establishment of funding programs for northern broadband funding. 1993-1995

Television and training work:

Executive Director of Inuit Broadcasting Corporation (1994-95); Managed Atii Distance Education initiative in management studies, winning awards for the Interactive Televised Instruction program (1993); developed business for the successful creation of Inuit Communications Systems Limited, a subsidiary of Inuit Broadcasting Corporation (1989-91); taught television production for Inuit Broadcasting Corporation and OKalaKatiget Society. 1987-1989
